Mr. Dominick A. Viti Jr., age 80, of Mohawk, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with the love and support of his family by his side.
Born in Utica on Oct. 1, 1928, Dominick was the son of the late Domenico and Agnes (Ciamponi) Viti. He was raised and educated locally. As a member of the “Greatest Generation,” he was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his country in the Philippines during World War II. On Oct. 5, 1950, he married the love of his life, Theresa Grimaldi, with whom he shared 58 years as wonderful partners who shared each other’s dreams and ambitions.
Dominick began his working career with his late brother at Casper Home Furnishings located on Bleecker Street. He also established and owned the Mohawk Bake Shop located on Main Street in Mohawk and Herkimer, a venture shared with his loyal wife, Theresa, and their children until his retirement in the mid 1980’s. Dominick will be remembered by his family and his patrons as a hard working man of great integrity, one who loved people and committed to being of service to others. His greatest accomplishment was having an opportunity to spend time with his family in a successful family business. During his leisure time he enjoyed camping, boating, hunting and fishing. He was a loyal fan of the New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills. His affiliation was currently with Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk and his childhood parish was St. Anthony in Utica.
Dominick is survived by his wife, Theresa; his son, Dominick F. Viti of Herkimer, his daughter, Terry and her husband David McClouskey of East Herkimer, his daughter, Gina Viti of Ilion; his son, David and wife Theresa of Plattsburgh, his son, Dean and wife Susan of Ilion, and son Albert and wife Teresa of Dallas, Texas. Also his surviving grandchildren, Keith, Dominick, Nichole, Christina, Andrea, Daniela, Allison, Kayla, Dean, A.J.; and eight great-grandchildren. Surviving in-laws are Fred J. and Marie C. Grimaldi, Robert and Joanne Grimaldi, Carmen and JoAnn Grimaldi and Dennis and Carolyn Grimaldi.
He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Lori Viti; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Gaspare W. “Casper” and Angeline “Ang” Viti, as well as his second wife, Antoinette Viti, Frank and Nancy Viti and Albert and Isabella Viti.
The family would like to acknowledge the “caring” nursing staff of the first floor of the Allen Calder wing at Faxton-St Luke’s Hospital and Doctors Patel and Booth for their compassionate guidance. The family would also like to acknowledge all of Dominick’s friends at Centrex Labs, and the support of The Medicine Shoppe, Rural Metro Ambulance, and the ER staffs at St. Elizabeth and Faxton-St. Luke’s Hospitals.
Visitation will be held Monday from 4 to 7 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings.
Dominick’s funeral service will commence on Tuesday morning at 9:30 from the funeral home and at 10:30 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Military Honors. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
