Jack Edward Northrop, age 92, of Travis Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, January 31, 2010, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Syracuse, after a long illness.
He was born on September 28, 1917, in Brooklyn, son of the late Charles and Ann Northrop. Jack was raised in Brooklyn, where he attended P.S. 208 and was a graduate of Childen High School. A veteran of World War II, in 1940 he enlisted in the US Army, where he served in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on May 26, 1945.
For forty years, Mr. Northrop worked as a butcher for the Avenue D Butcher Shop in Brooklyn. He retired in 1976. In 1983, he moved to Mohawk with his wife, the former Violet Schineller Neary, coming from Brooklyn.
Jack was an active member of American Legion Post #38 in Herkimer, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #502, Frankfort, and the Polish Club in Herkimer.
Surviving besides his wife, Violet, are one daughter, Jill Fitzer and her husband, Donald, of Rockville Center, LI; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Northrop, and a sister, Clair Wright.
Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Calling hours and funeral service with military honors will be at a later date and time to be announced.
