Mrs. Lena Sgroi, 90, formerly of Fourth Avenue, Frankfort and of Herkimer, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in Valley Health Services.
She was born in Herkimer on Dec. 24, 1918, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Philomena Barbuto Stagliano and she attended Herkimer schools She was married to Carl J. Sgroi on April 20, 1940, in St. Mary’s Church, Frankfort. Mr. Sgroi passed away on April 17, 1985. Mrs. Sgroi was employed as a seamstress for several local dress shops throughout the area for many years. She was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church and a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Lena is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Phylis Lints of Magnolia, Del., Carol Surace of Syracuse and Mary Ellen and Richard Ganci of Utica; one son, Joseph Sgroi of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Antoinette Stasilli of Herkimer; eight grandchildren several great grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Lucille Mc Glone in August of 2004, her son-in-law, James Butch Surace, two brothers, Joseph Stagliano and Sam Stagliano and two sisters, Pat Madison and Mary Barberio.
Her funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 1:30 p.m. in Sts. Anthony And Joseph Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home.
Lena’s family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff of Valley Health Service for the wonderful care and kindness shown to her during her final days.
