Mary E. Guzewich, 89, of Dolgeville, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, June 25, 2009 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, with her loving family by her side.
She was born on May 12, 1920, in Oswego, N.Y., a daughter of the late Harry and Helen (Devens) Cavellier. She attended Pulaski Central School and graduated with the Class of 1938. She went on to receive her education from Oswego State Teacher’s College and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education. On July 6, 1946, she was united in marriage to Charles A. Guzewich in Watertown, New York. Mary and her husband moved to the Dolgeville area in 1958. She was a Social Studies teacher for Little Falls Junior High School and retired in June of 1980. Mr. Guzewich past away on Aug. 5, 1984, after 38 blessed years of marriage.
Mary was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Dolgeville, where she was a Sunday school teacher, helped our youth receive their Confirmation, was a past trustee, and Eucharistic Minister.
In her many years living in the Dolgeville area, Mary had many accomplishments. She was a charter and active member of the Dolgeville-Manheim Historical Museum, Fortnightly Literary Club, and Little Falls Historical Society, member of the Little Falls Hospital Guild, Dolgeville Retired Teachers, Herkimer County Retired Teacher’s Association, and Catholic Women’s Club. She was also Dolgeville’s 2004 Recipient of the Fifth Annual Lyndon Lyon Community Award, in which she was recognized for her endless community work in Dolgeville and the surrounding areas.
Mary was also the matriarch of her family. She was a strong and supportive mother to her children, a kind and loving grandmother and a special great-grandma, she will be deeply missed by her family.
Mary is survived by her loving children, John (Jack) Guzewich and his wife, Judy of Bowie, Md., David Guzewich and his wife, Sandy of Belair, Md., James Guzewich and his wife, Nora of Scotia, N.Y., and Karen (Guzewich) Nagle and her husband, Paul of Dolgeville; 10 grandchildren, Eric Guzewich and his wife, Sue, Mark Guzewich, Scott Guzewich and his wife, Jodie, Kim Guzewich, Tom Guzewich, Kevin Guzewich, Peter Guzewich; Brendan Nagle, Natalie Nagle, and Ian Nagle; three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Timothy and Anya; her sister-in-law, Jean Guzewich of Syracuse, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her brothers, Raymond and Leo Cavellier and their wives.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday (today) June 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Thomas Vail, pastor officiating. Procession will follow to Richland Cemetery in Richland, New York where prayers were offered. The family will hold a memorial celebration in honor of Mary’s life in the future.
