You've got to be the same Sally Leonard I graduated with....Herkimer 1969. We were friends in high school for a while. I am living in Orlando and have been here for 25 yrs. My sister still lives in the valley so I get up there once in a while. I do miss the days> We sure did have a great time. Funny though, I never cared for the small town atmosphere when I lived there, but kinda miss it now. I like reading this once in a while. I have come across a few names I remember. Where in SC do you live

This Winter has been exceptionally beautiful here in New York. We actually had a white Christmas this year. The roads were covered in snow, along with the trees coated in a thick layer of pure white snow. I haven't seen a Christmas like this since I was a little girl. I've seen in the local villages huge snowmen made by children and a woman that was cross-country skiing up on Second Street in Ilion. We've had the sounds of snowmobiles and Christmas Carolers and the sounds of shovels shoveling and snowblowers blowing. Currier and Ives must have picked Central New York when they painted their pictures...New York is picture perfect in the winter and I wouldn't trade it for anyplace else in the world.

The mega reunion is for anyone that ever went to Mohawk Central/Jarvis School. You could have been a student or a teacher or an office worker or cafeteria person. It is for all, any year, any age. It seems to be gathering a lot of momentum and I for one can't wait to go home and be there that weekend (Columbus Day weekend). Keep the date open folks. It is going to be a blast. And Happy New Year to all in the Mohawk Valley. Miss the valley, Not the snow and cold.

Merry Christmas to all the valley folks. I'm in Jacksonville, Fla. (since 1974) and love it here. It is actually 80 today (I have on capris and sandals). I do miss the fall & spring up there - forsythia and lilacs and the trees changing. I don't miss shoveling snow, tho. We do have a hockey team down here (isn't that funny) and ice skating at a local rink - indoors, of course. Take care all and have a safe and blessed holiday season. Barb HHS class of 1964.

As the old adage goes, "You always want, what you cannot have." I long for NY and snow, quiet nights (where all you hear is your breath), sounds of train whistles bouncing off the valley at night, the fire whistles, christmas carols...How I miss all of you back in Ilion. You have a great home. I miss it. 1982.

I used to drive the little falls bus for central coach lines and later for Birnie bus. The colony girls and the male counterparts that worked in the workshops at the time were always a pleasant part of my day. They worked hard, loved attention on any level, and were always smiling and seemed happy. One has to wonder, if God truly deprived these people of anything, or just simply spared them the harsher reality of life. To be so innocent and naive was a handicap, but also a blessing. I was blessed just driving them to work and back on any given day.

We had a lady from Rome State School working with us ....she was a big fan of country music and I remember she turned me on to Porter Waggoner...a very sweet lady who had endured a very bad childhood...both parents alcoholics who would lock all four kids in the cabin when they came to town to drink..and leave them there for days...so she genuinely seemed happy to be living with us and outta the confines of the state school. I remember they were not paid much and worked for the day they would be totally independent...after she left us she moved into a apartment on Main Street and soon was seen movin around town with her own kids...and so the cycle continued

Monday, Dec 03, 2007 (07:12:27 pm CST)

It is my understanding that the "colony girls" were in a setting provided by the county for "slow" or developmentally delayed girls. The idea was to give them a place to live and a way to earn a living while the county picked up the "slack" financially and took care of them. Loosly similar to the ARC now. Our neighbor had a girl who cleaned for her too.

Is there anyone out there from the class of 1940? Would like to hear from them.
