With star point guard Christy Traglia out of the first quarter of Wednesdays game against Frankfort-Schuyler, with an anke injury, the Mohicans turned to defense to beat the Knights 36-30.
Mohawk (9-5), losers of their last two games, didn’t see things turning around early against Frankfort-Schuyler when Traglia hurt her ankle and never returned to the game.
They did though, as a solid 2-3 zone held the Knights to single digits in every quarter of the game, the first time the Mohicans accomplished that this season.
Leading the defensive charge was Kaylee Luppino, Karlee Platts, Maggie Werenczak, Alexis Gilbert, Morgan Hall, Calli Wiggins and Lexy Johnson. By the time the first half was over with, Mohawk led by five (22-17). When the second half was done, the Mohicans won by six.
Helping the Mohicans to their defensive win were Luppino, Gilbert, Platts and Werenczak. Luppino had a team-high 12 points and four steals, Gilbert had nine points, Platts had seven rebounds and Werenczak had five rebounds and three steals.
Giving the Mohicans a hard time on defense was Frankfort-Schuyler’s Kathryn Tamburro and Alexandria Palumbo. Tamburro finished with a team-high 13 points and Palumbo finished with 10 points.
Mohawk’s next game is against Herkimer on Friday. The Magicians will host the Mohicans at 7:30 p.m. in their varsity gym
Frankfort-Schuyler has no more game this season.
