With the final week of wrestling being hosted by Albany’s Times Union Center over the previous weekend, the best of the best was present to prove they earned the right to wrestle in the event.

Two local wrestlers present at the event were Ilion’s Laken Cook and Jon Treen. Cook, an eighth grader, and Treen, a junior, did well enough at the Utica Auditorium the week before to have a chance to win a state title.

 Cook, a Sectional Champion at 96 pounds, did the better of the two over the weekend. Overall, Cook went 4-2, losing his first and his second match. Beating Cook was Pal-Mac’s Taylor Jones and Gouverneur’s Dillon Stowell. Each match went to a decision with Jones winning 3-1 and Stowell winning 8-1.
Cook beat Robert F. Wagner’s Lakshya Patrekar, Peru’s Kyler Agoney, Oyster Bay’s Jack Leguelaff and Edgemont’s John Aslanian. Every match but one was won by decision. Cook beat Patrekar by pin (1:26), Agoney by major decision (10-0), Leguelaff by major decision (8-0) and Aslanian by decision (9-2).

As for Treen, he went 2-2. Treen defeated Beekmantown’s Nick Bushey and Dobbs Ferry’s Jarron Saunders, but lost to Southwestern’s John Mistretta and Canisteo Greenwood’s Brandon Mills.

Treen beat Bushey by decision (7-3) and Saunders by pin 2:14. As for Mistretta and Mills, both beat Treen by decision. Mistretta won 17-11 and Mills won 6-2.
