Three Herkimer County Community College Generals earned second-team NJCAA All-America recognition for their contributions to the team’s fine 2011 season. Sophomores Kayla Ladd and Emily Woudenberg and freshman pitcher Krista Oakes led the charge as the Generals went 34-9 and reached the final round of the Region III playoffs.
Fonda’s Ladd graduated in May with an associate degree in physical education and is Herkimer’s first ever two-time softball All-America selection. The Generals’ designated player, Ladd batted .462 with 61 hits, 11 doubles, eight home runs and 49 runs batted in on the season. In two years, she amassed a career batting average of .456 with 81 runs scored, 23 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs and 102 runs batted in.
“Kayla has helped propel Herkimer softball to where it is today, one of the best college softball programs in the country,” coach P.J. Anadio said. “Her career numbers speak for themselves, but what I’m most proud of is her attaining her degree and moving on to continue her education and playing career.”
Ladd is transferring to SUNY-Brockport.
Ilion’s Woudenberg also completed her physical education degree and the two-year captain earned postseason honors for her play in the outfield. She led team with a .476 batting average and had nine doubles, four triples, four home runs and 44 runs batted in.
“I’m particularly proud that Emily was recognized for her efforts this season,” Anadio said. “She is the prototypical model of what every student-athlete should be. She has class, work ethic, determination and talent. Her leadership skills and commitment to this program have been invaluable to Herkimer softball. I don’t know if I will ever have another student-athlete like her.”
Woudenberg is transferring to SUNY-Cortland.
Oakes, s physical education major off the Akwesasne Reservation near the Canadian border, went 12-3 in the circle as a freshman with a 1.51 ERA. In 88 1/3 innings pitched, Oakes allowed 19 earned runs on 51 hits while striking out 122 batters and walking 48. Opponents batted .162 against her.
“This was the plan from the get-go with Krista,” Anadio said. “She was an extremely talented pitcher coming out of high school and we were fortunate to have her at Herkimer. We knew the potential was there and we conveyed to her family that if she lived up to her end of the deal, working hard in the classroom and on the field, she would become an All-American, hopefully win a national championship here and earn a scholarship afterward to finish her degree. One of those goals has been reached, and we have two more to achieve with a season left to play.”
