Herkimer County Community College’s men and women followed similar paths into the Region III lacrosse finals Saturday. Both teams fell behind 3-1 and both came back strong to win in the semifinals at Wehrum Stadium.
The women scored only once in the first half but the Generals outscored Broome Community College 13-0 after halftime in a 14-3 win.
The Herkimer men did not wait so long to get going offensively — they led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter — but they matched the women’s run of 13 straight goals in their 19-8 win over Monroe Community College.
Korrin Nash scored six goals and assisted on two others for Herkimer in the women’s game while Melissa Brennan matched her eight points with four goals and four assists. Jolene Quinta and Melissa Cleeton each had one goal and one assist; Kaytrin DellaSala and Angela Haskins each scored one goal; and Brittney Tinelli chipped in with an assist. Goalie Julie McAvoy recorded one save.
The Generals’ opponent in Sunday’s regional championship game will be top-seeded Monroe Community College, a 23-2 winner Saturday against Mercyhurst North East. Monroe, the defending champion, defeated Herkimer twice during the regular season.
Doug Hoch scored twice in the final five minutes of the first quarter and had the go-ahead goal for the Herkimer men with 2:59 left in the period. Seven Generals scored in the second quarter while the tournament’s top seed outscored Monroe and built a 13-3 halftime lead.
Jake Koch scored four goals and Hoch added three in the victory. Justin Hayes scored one goal and assisted on six others; Kevin Kemp had two goals and two assists; Chase Dominick, Justin Gill, J.P. Finn and David Limbouris each scored two goals; and Billy Bushell had a goal and two assists. Zach Bates made 11 saves.
Lance Carter scored the first two goals of the game for Monroe but was shut out for the final 55 minutes of action. Dan Hinderland had four goals for the Tribunes and Matt McShea made 22 saves.
The other men’s semifinal ended with the same 19-8 score with two-time defending national champion Onondaga Community College claiming victory over Hudson Valley Community College. Onondaga will attempt to win back regional bragging rights Sunday against Herkimer which ended the Lazers’ winning streak at 42 games last month in Syracuse.
Play begins Sunday at noon with the women’s teams taking the field first. The men’s game will follow.
