Section III adjusts schedule
With the late losses of two schools from the Class D football landscape Section III has made changes to balance out its schedule for 2010.

West Canada Valley and Mohawk had been scheduled to play crossovers against Bishop Grimes of Syracuse which, like Hamilton last week, withdrew from competition because of a player shortage.

With two teams out of what had been a 16-team, three-division alignment, the section was in most cases able to match up teams which had lost games off their schedules. An effort was made to avoid duplicating games that had already been scheduled which necessitated some additional changes.

Mohawk had originally been scheduled to play at home against Bishop Grimes the second week of the season while West Canada Valley was to have hosted the Cobras in its second-to-last game.

Mohawk will instead host Port Byron Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.

West Canada Valley’s schedule required additional changes. The Indians’ Week 1 game against New York Mills has been moved to the road Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. The Indians will open the season at home Sept. 4 against Morrisville-Eaton at 2 p.m.

In addition to Richfield Springs and Rome Catholic dropping programs — Richfield Springs has also moved its athletic programs to Section IV while Rome Catholic is sending football players to Notre Dame of Utica — the losses of Hamilton and Bishop Grimes have left the section with four teams in Class D’s Western Division (Port Byron, Onondaga, Sandy Creek and Weedsport), five in the Central (Cooperstown, Morrisville-Eaton, New York Mills, Oriskany and Waterville) and five in the East (Beaver River, Dolgeville, Mohawk, South Lewis and West Canada Valley).
