Magicians, Bombers both lose

Hamilton won a couple of close matches in doubles to complete a 5-0 sweep of Herkimer in a Center State Conference boys tennis crossover match Wednesday afternoon.

TENNIS

At first doubles, the Emerald Knights’ John Valencia and Tom Bodnar needed three sets to beat the Magicians’ Donnie Coleman and Paul Grubner 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. David Schutt and Andrew Powrie won two close sets over Herkimer’s Vito Carbone and Pat Malowski 6-4, 6-4 at second doubles.
Hamilton didn’t have quite the same difficulty in singles winning all three matches in straight sets.
At first singles, Gennady Julien defeated Robert Murphy 6-3, 6-2. At second singles, Josh Valencia downed Ryan Judd 6-2, 6-0 and at third singles, Ryan Burdick defeated Mike Clark 6-0, 6-0.
Herkimer dropped to 1-3 in the league and 1-5 overall.

WESTMORELAND — Westmoreland lost just seven games in five matches to beat the Golden Bombers in a CSC crossover.
That included dropping just three games in singles where Josh Tayefeh defeated Ryan Donato 6-0, 6-1, Robert Barns downed Dominick Calhoun 6-0, 6-2 and Josh Deptola defeated Matt Pelletier 6-0, 6-0.
Wins in doubles came easily as well as Michael Hartwell and T.J. Losowski stopped Tony Schrader and Drew Alexander 6-0, 6-2 and Ian Dunning and Tyler Witter defeated Sal Calhoun and Kyle Howe 6-2, 6-0.
Ilion dropped to 2-4 on the season.
