With Mount Markham defeating Westmoreland 3-1 and Sauquoit defeating Little Falls 3-2 on Tuesday in the Sectional Semifinals, the Mustangs and the Indians will face each other in the Sectionals Finals.
Mount Markham, the #1 seed, and Sauquoit, the #3 seed, will meet up for the third time this season today. Mount Markham has beaten the Indians twice, and will be looking for the trifecta at 7 p.m. at Oneida High School.
Both teams faced each other early in the season (January 17th and January 26th), so it’s tough to say that Mount Markham will again beat the Indians 3-0 in a match. At that point in time, the Mustangs were sweeping everyone that they played.
Because Mount Markham swept Sauquoit in both their meetings though, they are heavily favored. Helping the Mustangs in their wins was the usual group of Steve NiNigro, Brian Gurtowski, Zach King, Zach O’Sullivan, Danny Roberts, Dylan Roberts and Alex Wrobel. All have helped the Mustangs to a 17-1 season, losing only to Westmoreland 3-2.
Sauquoit went 10-4 in their regular season. Leading the Indians is Dave Stulman. The 6’4’’ senior is the team’s best player and has the ability to take games over on a good day. When Stulman isn’t being fed on the court though, the Indians really have no other threats. Look for Mount Markham endure Stulman’s attack with their own balanced offense. With the Indians unable to control the tempo, Mount Markham will have the advantage.
