ILION MEET

Golden Bomber Brandon Rawson broke a school record on Wednesday- and might have broken a curse in the process.

The Ilion boys’ cross-country team hasn’t defeated a squad from the dynamic Sauquoit Valley program in the past 15 years, according to Ilion’s head coach Charlie Maxson.

That means Rawson was a preschooler the last time Ilion came away from a meet with Sauquoit Valley with a win.

“The curse is over,” said Rawson happily after learning that the Bombers had narrowly edged Sauquoit Valley, 26-29. The loss was the Indians’ first of the season and preserved Ilion’s own perfect record.

The boys’ side of the Bombers is now 15-0.

Rawson finished second in the race with a time of 17:48.9, just behind Sauquoit Valley’s Nick Spina. Spina set a new course record, finishing the 3.1-mile run in 17:44.6. Rawson’s finish is now the best of any Ilion boy.

“Spina had a pretty good kick,” said Rawson. “I wish I had won it, but I’ll take (the team win) over first place individually every day.”

Third-place finisher Domenic Pedulla (Sauquoit Valley) also smashed the previous course record of 17:58, set by Zach Yates of Oriskany in 2008.
Ilion’s fifth man, Steve Paddock, secured the victory for the Bombers with his 11th-place finish.

“Today was all about Paddock,” said Maxson after the race.

Defeating “perennial powerhouse” Sauquoit Valley, Maxson said, is an important step in preparing for meets later this season against Adirondack and Poland.

In the girls’ varsity race, Sauquoit Valley’s Marissa Jones and Lindsey Hogel finished one-and-two. Ilion’s Shelby McIntyre was the first Bomber girl to finish with a time of 22:54.

In the girls’ modified race, Sauquoit Valley’s Olivia Brink set a new course record on the 2-mile trail. Her time of 11:58 bested McIntyre’s time of 12:01 in 2008.
