The Little Falls Mounties hold the second spot in Class C in the first 2012-13 New York State Sportswriters Association rankings released Monday afternoon.

The undefeated Mounties (6-0), Section III’s defending champions and a state semifinalist last season, defeated Waterville 53-29 at their Kasner Klassic Saturday afternoon. They trail only Alexander Hamilton of Section I in the season’s first rankings.

Notre Dame of Elmira, the Section IV champion Little Falls defeated in regional play at Herkimer County Community College in March, is ranked fourth. Other notable teams ranked among the top 20 include Section II Hoosic Valley (fifth) and Maple Hill (ninth) and Section III Cooperstown (11th) and Fabius-Pompey (15th). Fabius-Pompey won Section III’s Class C-2 title last year before losing to Little Falls, the C-1 champion, in the overall Class C title game in the Carrier Dome.

Other No. 1 teams are Section I Ossining in Class AA, Section II Holy Names of Albany in Class A, Section I Irvington in Class B, and Section IV South Kortright in Class D.

Among area schools, Notre Dame of Utica ranks 23rd in Class B, and Oriskany and New York Mills are ninth and 11th in Class D. Undefeated Fort Plain did not make the Class C cut.
