Fort Schuyler broke the game open early as it beat Herkimer 12-2 in a season-opening non-league American Legion baseball game Wednesday night.
Fort Schuyler scored five times in the second inning and chased Herkimer starter Sean Tripp after 4 1/3 innings.
Ed Schulze had the big blast for the winners with a three-run homer.
Tripp allowed five hits and nine runs while striking out five and walking four.
Herkimer got two hits each from Mike Fahy, Steve Hartman and Miguel Rodriguez. Hartman drove in Herkimer’s first run with a first-inning single. That gave Post 38 a 1-0 lead that was short-lived.
Herkimer is back in action Monday when it hosts Clonan Post.
