For the second time this season, the Herkimer Magicians went undefeated through a week of play. The Magicians defeated Ilion (3-1) and Oriskany (3-0) for the second time in the season.
Helping the Magicians (4-4) to their sweep of the Redskins was a combination of five sophomores, juniors and seniors.

The sophomore was Casey Scalise. Scalise finished the match with five service points.

The junior was Trevor Roorda. Roorda finished the match with 11 kills and two blocks.

The seniors were Vito Carbone, Ryan Judd and Ben Wenke. Carbone finished with eight service points, three aces and five assists. Judd finished with 12 service points and six assists. And Wenke finished with eight service points, five kills and three blocks.

Together, the five Magicians helped beat the Redskins by at least six points in every match (25-13 game one, 25-18 game two, 25-19 game three).

In game one, the match was close in the beginning. Herkimer only had a one point lead (9-8) early until the team ripped off a 16-5 run. Oriskany called a time-out when they were down by five (15-10), but it didn’t slow the Magicians down, earning the first win of the match.

In game two, Oriskany came out and played a lot better. The Redskins climbed out to an early 7-3 lead with Herkimer having a couple miscues in their back line. Once that was figured out, Herkimer got back on track and eventually tied the match at 14 with the Magicians going on a 6-2 point swing.

From there, with the help of Carbone and Peter MacKenzie, Herkimer ended up winning the match 25-18, with Carbone tallying four service points and MacKenzie earning the final two points with kills.

In game three, the most competitive of the match, Herkimer’s Ryan Judd came out and served very well to beat the Redskins by six in the game-winner.

For Oriskany, in the loss, they had Jeff Wilson, Adam Wilk, Ed Lee and Ryan Wallace play well. Wilson had three kills, eight assists and four digs. Wilk had five blocks, eight digs and one ace. Lee had one block, two kills and seven assists. And Wallace had two blocks and two digs.

Herkimer’s next match is against Mount Markham on Monday. The Magicians will host the undefeated Mustangs at Herkimer Elementary School at 7 p.m.
