FOURTH ANNUAL HERKIMER INVITATIONAL
The Canastota Raiders placed three wrestlers in the finals Saturday and finished atop a 21-team field at the fourth annual Herkimer Invitational.
Zach Zupan and Wyatt Albanese won back-to-back titles at 182 and 195 pounds, respectively, for the Raiders whose 141 1/2 points gave them an 18-point cushion over runner-up Carthage. Dolgeville placed third in the team scoring with Mohawk tied for seventh, Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley ninth, Mt. Markham 17th, Little Falls 18th and Poland 19th.
Zupan’s 182-pound match against Shayne Brady of Carthage was stopped 29 secnds into the third period when Brady suffered an injury on the first takedaown of the match. Albanese then scored a 3-1 decision against Ben Honis from Christoan Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt.
Dolgeville had a pair of individual champions and Mohawk and Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley had one each. Ben Nastovski and Triston Engle were Dolgeville’s champions and Engle took home the most outstanding wrestler award. Nastovski was a 5-4 winner in his 120-pound title bout against Blake Engebresten of Central Square. Engle trailed 4-2 entering the third period of his final match and started in the down position; he reversed J.T. Romagnoli from Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt to tie the score then recorded a near fall to take the lead on the way to a 9-4 win.
Noah Handy, Dolgeville’s third finalist, was beaten 6-5 by Dennis Hilts of Camden in the 106-pound final. Handy took a one-point lead with 17 seconds left in the match but Hilts countered with a quick reversal for the win.
Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley’s T.J. Philpotts won the 99-pound title by a 13-0 major decision against C.J. Walz of Mohawk.
Mohawk’s John Mazza defeated Anthony Mosca of Watervliet 7-1 for the championship at 132 pounds.
Other individual champions included Carthage’s Andrew McFarland at 113 pounds and Trevor Gibbons at 285, Onondaga’s Tyler Field at 126, New Hartford’s Sean McKenna at 138, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Gage Patry at 152, CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt’s Matt Friske at 171, and Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Joe Sprung at 220.
Camden’s Tom Confer, the 160-pound champion, took home the aggregate pin trophy. He pinned all four of his opponents in a total time of five minutes and 59 seconds.
Among area teams, Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley’s Ryan Zawtocki, Poland’s Albert Amacher, Dolgeville’s Richard Lyon and Mt. Markham’s MacKenzie Dorie were third-place finishers and Mohawk’s Dave Bardo and Stephen Davis, Little Falls’ Andrew Messina, Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley’s Zach Steele, Dolgeville’s Tyler Richards and Kasey Foster placed fourth.
