Kane Seamon and Jackie Kosakowski were scholastic stars of cross country and track and field in the Center State Conference before running in college. Saturday, back running closer to home, they were crowned champions of Herkimer’s 15th annual D.A.R.E. five-kilometer run.

Richfield Springs’ Seamon, who recently completed his college career at SUNY-Cobleskill, set the pace for a field of almost 200 runners with a time of 17:02, 67 seconds faster than runner-up Kelsey Barra.

Paul Humphrey was the third runner to cross the finish line and the last before Kosakowski claimed first place in the women’s division. Kosakowski, a graduate of Sauquoit Valley High School and the College of William and Mary, posted a time of 18:43 and finished more than two minutes ahead of her nearest challenger, Michele Nizzi, the women’s defending champion.

Nicholas Ashton of Whitesboro took fifth place and Herkimer placed three hometown runners — Ryan and Kyle Turner and Jason Alexander — in the top 10. A third Turner, Sean, placed 11th, one spot
