Members of the Mohawk varsity football team will run onto their own field next Friday and play their first home game under the lights.
“The students are excited,” said Lisa Upson, athletic coordinator for the Mohawk Central School District. “It’s a definite improvement.”
The improvements at lower Tolpa Field were part of an EXCEL capital project that was set into motion over three years ago. Voters in the school district approved of the $11.8 million project in May 2007, which has come approximately $1 million under budget.
The field will be used for varsity, junior varsity and modified soccer and football. The new complex features a football and soccer field, goal posts, stadium bleachers, a large scoreboard and stadium lighting.
Upson said the field was previously used mainly for practice, and the football field was originally behind the elementary school and the soccer field was at Jarvis Junior-Senior High School.
The field needed to go through two growing seasons — last fall and this past spring — for the sod field to be ready for use.
Upson said the football and soccer teams needed to play different fields last year.
Mohawk officials are encouraging members of the public to attend the game.
"We’re very excited about the community coming out to our first game on the field,” said Superintendent of Schools Joyce Caputo.
It starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free. The parking lot holds up to 90 cars, but people can also park at the Fisher Elementary School parking lot, which is adjacent to the field.
The field will be dedicated during homecoming week on Oct. 1.
Caputo said the EXCEL capital project is pretty much completed.
“We’re down to and making the last checks, making sure everything is completed,” she said.
The project included the athletic field improvements, a new bus loop at Fisher Elementary School, asbestos abatement and improvements towards instructional technology, such as SMART boards. The three-phase project also included the installation of outside security cameras, keyless entry, wireless Internet, boiler replacement, roof replacement and a phone system replacement.
An EXCEL project — or Expanding our Children’s Education and Learning — is a project sponsored by the state education department and falls within the following categories: education technology, health and safety, accessibility, physical capacity expansion or school construction and energy.
