After losing to Herkimer 3-2 on Monday, it didn’t look like the Ilion Golden Bombers would win a regular season match with their next two games against Mohawk and Little Falls, both of which beat the Bombers earlier in the season (Mohawk 3-1 and Little Falls 3-0). But in the their second to last home game, Ilion came out and played their best match to date, sweeping the Mohicans 3-0 on Wednesday.

Helping the Golden Bombers (1-14) was the combination of Carly Hosler, Sharon Howell, Emily Gilman, and Miranda Zalocka. Hosler, Howell and Gilman served very well in the match, totaling 15 aces together, with Hosler leading the way with seven in the match. As for Zalocka, she played well in front of the net with Kayleigh Pedersen, totaling five digs, one kill, three aces, two blocks and three assists.

“The girls played like a team tonight, and didn’t stop playing” head coach Sharon Howell said. “My bench also had an integral part in the win, always supporting the girls on the floor and getting the job done when I put them in.”

The Bombers bench on a normal night consists of: Alexis Edwards, Tiffany Guerriera, Kathleen Kramas, Kayla Lauterbach, Chelsea Mroz, Rachel Stegemann and Cassandra Thibault.

Ilion beat Mohawk by 13 points in game one (25-12), seven points in game two (25-18) and two points (29-27) in the decisive game three.

Leading the Bombers to the first win of their season was Howell who had six digs, five kills, four aces and one block, Gilman who had eight digs, four kills and four aces and Hosler who had seven digs, two kills, seven aces and seven assists.

Mohawk’s Mary Hurteau, Heather Shipman, Brittany Siver and Miranda Rathbun had good games for the Mohicans. Hurteau had four kills and six assists, Shipman had two kills, Siver had seven digs and Rathbun had one kill, three aces, one assist and five digs.

Ilion’s last match of the season is this Friday against the Little Falls Mounties. The Bombers will  host Little Falls with a start time of 7 p.m.

Mohawk’s next game is against Adirondack on Thursday. The Mohicans will host the Wildcats at 7 p.m. in Mohawk High School.
