MT. MARKHAM 26, COOPERSTOWN 14

Josh Holtham scored two touchdowns for Mt. Markham Friday and the playoff-bound Mustangs finished the regular season with a 26-14 non-league win over the Cooperstown Redskins.

The Mustangs (3-3), winners of three of their last four games, won a tie-breaker for the fourth Class C South playoff spot and will play a Class C-2 quarterfinal Friday at Frankfort-Schuyler. Mt. Markham and Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton both finished 2-3 in league play and the Mustangs claimed the playoff spot on the strength of their 12-9 overtime victory over the Warriors earlier this season.

Derek Mowers scored a touchdown in Friday’s victory and Tyler Ostrander recovered a fumble for the other Mt. Markham score.

The Mustangs held a 12-0 lead at halftime and Cooperstown’s first points came in the third quarter when Jacob Miller blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. Lucas Lyons ran for 69 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown for the Redskins (1-5).

Cooperstown, loser of five games in a row, returns to Class D East play Saturday with a game at home against Sauquoit Valley.
