The Herkimer County Community College Generals never trailed over the weekend and emerged from the Coliseum Kickoff at Wehrum Stadium with a 1-0-1 record after beating Holyoke Community College and playing Brookdale Community College to a draw.
Saturday’s 4-0 season-opening win was followed by a 2-all draw Sunday afternoon on the home turf. The Generals led Brookdale 2-1 at halftime but gave up a goal in the opening 10 minutes of the second half and could not break the deadlock with a late offensive flurry.
Alyssa Fiorillo, who had assisted on the first goal for the Jersey Blues, tallied the tying goal in the 54th minute unassisted. The game remained tied until the end but Herkimer had its share of chances in the final 10 minutes of play. Carrin LaCoppola, a freshman from Little Falls hit the left post with just under five minutes left on the clock and the Generals had another chance when they got the ball behind goalkeeper Elyse Umansky who had fallen down but they were unable to put it in the net.
There was no overtime played Sunday so the teams settled for a 90-minute draw.
Tiffany Jones-Maxwell and Amanda Brown scored goals in the first half for the Generals with assists from Krista Stubba of Poland and Ashleigh Tracy.
Sarah Shaughnessy had the first goal for Brookdale with a Fiorillo assist.
Michelle Cuomo and Rachel Abrams shared the Generals’ netminding duties and combined to make seven saves, four by Cuomo in the first half and three by Abrams after the intermission. Umansky turned away seven shots for Brookdale.
Cuomo had four more saves and Abrams added two Saturday as the freshmen combined on a shutout of Holyoke in the collegiate debut. Stubba had a goal and two assists, Tracy added a goal and an assist, Amanda Brown and Emily Baldwin each scored a goal and Jones-Maxwell contributed an assist.
Dominique Fountain had three saves for Holyoke’s Cougars.
The Generals have a week to prepare for their next match Sept. 5 at home against Clinton Community College.
