Matt Gonyea and Jim Traglia combined on a four-hit shutout as Ilion Post 920 defeated Clonan Post of Chadwicks 3-0 in a non-league American Legion baseball game Wednesday night.
Gonyea went the first six innings and was dominant. The Dolgeville High graduate and current Herkimer County Community College pitcher threw 71 of his 90 pitches for strikes and struck out 12 and walked one in allowing all four hits.
Traglia, a junior at Mohawk, pitched the final inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Ilion (2-3) got just enough offense scoring single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings.
Cameron DeMayo, a Mohawk graduate now playing at Brockport State, was right in the middle of all three scoring innings.
In the second, DeMayo led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, he scored on a Billy LeClair double.
In the fourth, DeMayo started the inning with a triple and scored on one of Clonan’s two errors on the night.
Then in the sixth, DeMayo’s third hit of the night, brought in Jamie Barr who had reached on an error and hustled his way to second.
DeMayo had half of Ilion’s six hits on the night.
Gary Puleo took the loss for Clonan.
Ilion is back in action Friday when it host Rhode Island then plays again Sunday in a doubleheader with Syracuse.
HERKIMER 11
FORT SCHUYLER 8
HERKIMER — Post 38 scored five times in the opening inning and went on to beat Fort Schuyler in a non-league game.
Miguel Rodriguez’s two-run double sparked the big first inning and Mike Fahy and Artie Zhushma added RBI singles.
Clonan scored four times in the second inning before Herkimer answered with two more runs to take a 7-4 lead. Fahy had an RBI doubled and Steve Hartmann added an RBI squeeze bunt in the second.
Clonan eventually tied the game at eight in the fourth inning before Herkimer scored once in the fifth and two more times in the sixth to seal the win.
Fahy had another RBI double in the sixth and finished with three hits and three RBI on the night. Mark Mula had three hits with a double and scored twice and Hartmann drove in two runs.
Rick Macri pitched scoreless ball over the final three innings to pick up the win in relief. Macri allowed two hits during his stint. Peter Mackenzie was the starter and lasted just three innings allowing seven runs on five hits before giving way to Justin Roorda, who allowed a run in one inning of work.
Chris Lewis allowed all 11 Herkimer runs on 13 hits over six innings to take the loss. Anthony Rose had two hits, a double and triple to lead Clonan.
