CENTER STATE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

Canastota won the team title Saturday and Mohawk sophomore John Mazza earned the top individual honor at the Center State Conference’s annual championship tournament.

Canastota, the runner-up one year ago, sent wrestlers to the finals in eight of the 15 weight classes and had five individual champions crowned as the Raiders accumulated 204 1/2 points. Division II champion Dolgeville finished with 167 points and had two champions among its five finalists. Defending champion Adirondack, Ilion and Sherburne-Earlville rounded out the top five with Mohawk sixth, Herkimer ninth, Little Falls 10th, Mt. Markham 12th and Poland 13th in the field of 13 teams which this year included Utica’s Proctor High School for the first time.

Mazza, the lone Mohawk finalist, won the 126-pound championship and was selected by coaches as the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. He pinned all three of his opponents, including Dolgeville Blue Devil Triston Engle, the No. 1 seed and a returning champion, at 1:25 of the title bout.

Each of the No. 1 seeds reached the final round in his weight class and nine were winners. Engle was one of 11 returning champions back for the tournament, all but one of whom were finalists.

Canastota’s Anthony Finocchiarro (138 pounds) and Wyatt Albanese (152) were two of the four 2011 champions to repeat Saturday. Junior Zach Zupan, who missed last year’s league tournament with an injury, won Saturday’s 170-pound crown for his third conference title. Jesse Puchales and Jacob Morris were Canastota’s other champions at 182 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Three-time champion Pat Webster (119 pounds) and 135-pounder Tyler Spann of Adirondack were other 2011 winners to repeat as champions. Ilion 106-pounder Laken Cook previously won a league title in 2010 before competing for Phoenix in the Onondaga High School League last year. Engle, Dolgeville teammate Kaleb Smith, Cooperstown’s Mikey Boyle and Canastota’s Travis Conklyn also returned to the finals Saturday after winning titles in 2011.

Danny Fox and Richard Lyon won titles for Dolgeville at 99 and 160 pounds, respectively.

Fox defeated Tanner Cook, the top seed, by injury default when the Ilion seventh-grader was hurt with two seconds left in the first period. Fox scored first with a takedown and Cook had tied the match with a reversal. Wrestling at the edge of the circle with the time running down, Fox attempted to turn Cook and score but the Golden Bomber’s right arm was caught awkwardly in the move. The match was stopped at that point and Cook was eventually taken from the gym at Adirondack High School on a stretcher.

Lyon scored a 7-1 decision against Adirondack Wildcat James Koperda, another No. 1 seed, in his title bout. To get to the final, Lyon had beaten No. 2 seed Rich Rinaldi of Mohawk by the same score in his semifinal match. Lyon and Koperda had a scoreless first period and Lyon started the second in the down position. The Blue Devil took a 5-0 lead by scoring a reversal and a near fall in the second period then took Koperda down again in the third after starting neutral.

Kasey Foster (170 pounds) joined Smith (152 pounds) and Engle as Dolgeville’s other second-place finishers. The Blue Devils had 11 wrestlers score in the top six positions in their weight classes, matching Canastota for the tournament’s highest total. Mohawk and Ilion each had 10 wrestlers place.

Laken Cook pinned all three of his opponents in the first period on the way to winning the 113-pound title for Ilion. Teammate Bryan Bennett was the 145-pound champion, pinning Jimmy Doolittle of Dolgeville in his semifinal then winning an 8-6 decision against top seed Anthony Micaroni of Canastota in his title bout.

Little Falls Mountie Andrew Messina drew the top seed at 106 pounds and pinned all three of his opponents. After first-period falls in the quarter- and semifinals, Messina went to the third against Zack Burke of Morrisville-Eaton in the final. Messina led 7-1 after two periods and took Burke down again in the third before pinning him at 5:04.

Sherburne-Earlville’s Spencer Franklin (120 pounds) and Cody Santiago (220) were the other individual champions crowned Saturday.

Section III holds its class tournaments Saturday with Herkimer competing in Class B at Cazenovia, Mohawk, Mt. Markham and Adirondack joining Canastota in Class C at Sherburne-Earlville, and Little Falls, Dolgeville, Mohawk, Poland and Cooperstown heading to Sandy Creek for Class D.
