HERKIMER — Members of the Herkimer BOCES Criminal Justice class, led by their instructor retired Little Falls Police Officer Rich Congdon, held their third annual Fallen Heroes ceremony on Thursday afternoon. They met to honor police officers and fire fighters from around the country who have fallen in the line of duty. The senior class gathered in the morning, paying tribute to police officers, and the junior class came together in the afternoon to honor fire fighters. Marching to the ceremony to the strains of the bagpipes playing “Amazing Grace” the students lowered the flag in front of the BOCES building in Herkimer to half-mast.  Members of the New Hartford Police Department, and the Ilion Fire Department were there in the afternoon to remember the high cost that is involved in doing the jobs that they love. Each student researched one fire fighter or police officer, and shared with the gathered crowd about the lives of these heroes, what they were like, and the people they left behind when they made their ultimate sacrifice. A long, slow silent salute marked the end of each tribute.
