SECTION III CLASS B CHAMPIONSHIP MEET
Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley sent one wrestler to the finals Saturday and finished 11th among 14 teams as a combined squad competing in Section III’s Class B championship game.
South Jefferson, the runner-up last year to Phoenix, overtook the Firebirds to win this year’s team title. Mexico, Camden and Cortland rounded out the top five teams.
Five Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley wrestlers made it to the quarterfinals and Dan Appley was the team’s lone semifinalist. Appley pinned Tim Gandino of Phoenix to reach the 182-pound final and took second place after being pinned in the first period by South Jefferson’s Logan LaFlamme, a repeat champion.
The other Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley quarterfinalists were 99-pounder T.J. Philpotts, 120-pounder Collin Treen, 132-pounder Zack Steele and 220-pounder Steven Napolitano. Philpotts finished fourth, Napolitano and Steele were fifth and Treen was sixth.
Appley is seeded sixth in Division II for next weekend’s Section III championship tournament. The top four finishers from classes B, C and D make up the field. Philpotts is unseeded but is the second alternate at 99 pounds. Napolitano also received a spot in the 220-pound bracket.
