SECTION III CLASS D CHAMPIONSHIP MEET
The Dolgeville Blue Devils put eight wrestlers in the finals Saturday and had six winners to claim Section III’s Class D team championship at Sandy Creek High School.
Runners-up to Sandy Creek last year, the Blue Devils turned the tables on the Comets and outscored them 218 1/2-182 at the top of a 14-team field. Mohawk was third with 164 points.
Daniel Fox repeated as a class champion for Dolgeville which sent seven wrestlers to the finals last year and had three winners. Moving up one class after winning at 99 pounds last year, Fox pinned Mohawk’s David Bardo in 42 seconds to win the 106-pound title bout Saturday. Noah Handy, beaten by his teammate for the 99-pound crown in 2012, won a championship of his own Saturday by pinning Peter Winkler from Immaculate Heart of Watertown.
Andrew Dillenbeck completed a Dolgeville sweep of the lowest weights with his 6-2 decision against top 113-pound seed Aspen Effner from Mt. Markham.
Other Dolgeville champions were Triston Engle at 152 pounds, Richard Lyon at 160 and Kasey Foster at 182. Tyler Richards was a finalist at 138 pounds, as was Jimmy Doolittle at 170.
Engle was a 1-0 winner in his title match against Wyatt Lyndaker of Copenhagen. Immaculate Heart’s Nick Koelmel dropped down in class to 145 and left Engle as the No. 1 seed.
Lyon, seeded third, scored a 6-2 decision against No. 2 seed Jaden Grill of Immaculate Heart in his semifinal then beat Sandy Creek’s Mason McNitt, the top seed, 13-12 in the finals.
Foster, a No. 1 seed entering the tournament, wrestled up to his standing and pinned Najib Quinones from Copenhagen in the second period in the finals.
Richards went to overtime with Davis Herold of Tully in the finals and lost a 4-3 decision. Doolittle was pinned by Sandy Creek’s Jake Benedict in his title bout.
Dolgeville also got top six finishes from Ben Nastovski (third place, 120 pounds), Stephen Gross (fifth, 126) and Austin Burton (fifth, 195). Nastovski, a top seed and the section’s top-ranked Division II 120-pounder, was upset by Cooperstown’s Mikey Boyle in the semifinals. Nastovski had beaten Boyle in the 113-pound class final last year; Boyle beat Poland’s Albert Amacher in Saturday’s final.
Mohawk’s John Mazza returned to the mat after an injury and repeated as a class champion. Mazza, who beat Engle in last year’s 120-pound final, pinned Copenhagen’s Travis Clarke in the first period in in Saturday’s 132-pound title bout.
