The Owen D. Young Wildcats stifled Old Forge defensively Monday and defeated the Eskimos 45-34.
The win took on added meaning for the Wildcats (9-7, 6-4 CSC-IV) who had already clinched a spot in the Section III playoffs. The win assures Owen D. Young of its first .500 regular season since winning a Class D-2 sectional title in 1998.
The win also assures Owen D. Young of a .500 finish within Division IV of the Center State Conference.
The Wildcats jumped ahead 13-5 in the first quarter behind six of Kyle Ferguson’s game-high 19 points. They limited the Eskimos to 25 points through three quarters and led by 15 at the start of the fourth. Alec Snyder’s two three-pointers helped Owen D. Young to a 13-7 third-quarter scoring edge.
Ferguson had seven rebounds and four steals in addition to his 19 points. Marty Collins added seven points, 14 rebounds and three assists.
Sam Waterbury hit three three-pointers for Old Forge and led the Eskimos with 13 points. Greg Hunkins added nine points.
The Wildcats finish the regular season at home Friday against New York Mills. They travel to Oriskany Wednesday.
