Public libraries can usually use some help.
In the case of the Frank J. Basloe Public Library in Herkimer, some of that help comes from the Friends of Basloe Library.
Currently, the organization is sponsoring a book sale to raise funds to assist the library in whatever way is needed. The sale runs through Feb. 12.
“I call this a mini-sale compared to the large one in mid-summer when we fill up the Washburn Room with books,” said Mary Macrina, of the Friends group.
She said the books, VHS tapes and other items have been displayed on tables set up in the reading area of the library. The public is welcome to stop in during library hours to browse through the books for sale. Checkouts will be handled at the front desk.
Proceeds from this sale, as well as the summer sale and ongoing sale set up at the library, go for the needs of the library, said Macrina.
“Last year, the library needed a new rug,” she said.
Funds from the Friends’ treasury went to help with this project as well as other needs such as the photocopying machine and a variety of small items.
Funds from the Friends of the Library also help sponsor the library’s children’s programs.
The Friends sponsor an ongoing book sale at the library. In addition to books, the sale features tapes, DVDs, magazines and puzzles.
“Books are received from the public all year long,” said Macrina. “Someone will bring in two or three books they want to get out of their house. They pile up quickly.”
Other books are added to the sale when they are culled from the library’s collection. Many of the books sell for just 50 cents, she said.
“Books are reviewed upon receipt,” said Macrina. “We put some for sale on Amazon.” This is handled through the library staff.
Macrina said a Friends newsletter goes out each year with a request for donations.
The Friends of the Library welcomes volunteers. Anyone interested may leave their name at the library’s front desk.
Another fun-raiser currently under way at the library is a raffle for a Nook tablet. Tickets are available at the library.
