The town of Herkimer will receive state funds to help with housing rehabilitation within the municipality.
The state Division of Housing and Community Renewal and nyhomes announced the approval for the $31 million in awards for communities throughout the Capital Region over the weekend.
A total of $119 million was awarded throughout the state.
The town has been awarded $400,000 for housing rehabilitation through the Community Development Block Grant. Municipalities were also granted funds for public sewer, public water, public facilities and home ownership projects. In total, 61 projects were approved for the CDBG award for a total of $27.9 million.
Awards were also given through the New York Main Street program, which helps local governments or nonprofit agencies to renovate buildings and neighborhoods that can provide economic growth.
Brian Lawlor, commissioner of the state Division of Housing and Community Renewal, said in a news release that a total of 130 projects were awarded out of more than 400 applications that were received. He said this year’s process “presented a number of challenges, including heightened competition from a large number of high-quality projects and decreased funding, due to the state’s economic condition.”
Town officials were unavailable for comment on Monday.
Other local municipalities receiving grants include the town of Salisbury for $400,000 for housing rehabilitation and the town of St. Johnsville for $589,000 for the public sewer.
The funds will help build or rehabilitate 640 affordable homes for working families, seniors and people with disabilities in the Capital Region, revitalize business districts and help improve public health, water and sewer facilities for more than 39,000 residents.
The awards are also expected to create 300 jobs, according to a news release from the state Division of Housing and Community Renewal.
“Increasing access to quality affordable housing, revitalizing Main Streets, and improving the state’s infrastructure are all critical components of New York’s economic recovery and job-creation efforts,” said Gov. David Paterson in a news release.
Surrounding municipalities have benefited from the CDBG awards in the past, including the villages of Ilion and Mohawk, and the Town of Schuyler.
