U.S. Representative Richard Hanna on Friday announced Remington Arms has been awarded a nearly $80 million contract to produce more than 5,000 sniper rifles for the U.S. military.
The work will be done in Ilion by Mohawk Valley employees, he said.
The federal contract comes from the Special Operations Command, a division of the U.S. Department of Defense. The contract will be awarded over the course of 10 years.
“The award of this contract to Remington Defense further shows they are the premier manufacturer of sniper rifles for our armed forces,” Hanna, R - Barneveld, said in a news release. “I have full confidence this contract will be fulfilled with the high quality and standards that define our Ilion workforce. I fully support Remington Arms and will continue working to ensure the company and its dedicated employees can thrive in Herkimer County for generations to come.”
The Remington Modular Sniper Rifle was designed for operators by operators, according to the release. It combines lethal accuracy at 1,500 meters with a user adjustable folding stock, free-float handguard and the potential to change barrel lengths and calibers within minutes, the release said.
The patent-pending system addresses the long range and medium range needs of the modern battlefield in one package designed to meet multiple emerging U.S. armed forces requirements, the release said. The MSR is mission-adaptable with just a change of the bolt face, barrel and magazine, and features lightweight, efficient design and optimal material selection for performance and corrosion resistance, the release said.
