    HERKIMER, N.Y. — Jamie Barr and Dillon Hassett combined to strike out 14 Utica Post 229 batters Thursday and Ilion Post 920 opened its season with a 10-3 victory at Herkimer County Community College.
    Barr, a Frankfort-Schuyler High School graduate pitching on his collegiate home field, went 6 2/3 innings and struck out 11 batters while walking one and hitting five. Hassett added three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
    Ilion Post broke a 1-all tie with four runs in the fourth inning then added three more after Utica Post got a run in the top of the sixth.
    John LeClair had two hits and drove in two runs for Ilion Post. Hassett went 3-for-4 and scored twice, Dylan Todd had two hits and scored a run and Bill LeClair had a triple leading off the first inning when he scored the first of his three runs.
    Mike Obernesser had a pair of hits for Utica Post which also got a double from Mike Scotellaro, a teammate of Barr at Herkimer County Community College.
    Ilion Post plays on the road Friday at Sauquoit Valley High School against Clonan Post 1000. The team’s next home game is Tuesday against Utica’s Adrean Post 625 and will play all of its home games at the college during a district construction project at Ilion High School.

    LITTLE FALLS POST 7, ROBERTS POST 3
    LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — Dylan Blumberg drove in four runs with a double and a home run Thursday and Little Falls Post 31 opened the 2010 season with a 7-3 victory over Roberts Post 161 of Holland Patent at Veterans Memorial Park.
    Blumberg cracked a three-run home run to give the home squad a lead after Roberts Post had scored a run in the top  of the first inning. He added an RBI-double in the sixth inning when Little Falls Post tallied three insurance runs. Roberts Post had scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut its deficit from 4-1 to 4-3.
    Dylan Hysack went six innings on the mound for Little Falls Post, allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out six batters.
    Little Falls Post is home again Friday for a game against Helmuth-Ingalls Post 232 from Franklin Springs. Game time is 7 p.m. and the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs will hold a meet-and-greet session to introduce their players to the public during the contest.

    FORT SCHUYLER POST 4, HERKIMER POST 1
    HERKIMER, N.Y. — Sean Tripp and Josh Keeler combined to pitch a six-hitter for Herkimer Post 31 Friday but the home team came up short in a 4-1 loss to Fort Schuyler Post 1290 at Harmon Field.
    Three Fort Schuyler Post pitchers — Anthony Rose, Dominick Galimo and Rich Lange combined to allow four hits in the win. Fort Schuyler Post caught a break in the third inning when Mike Dobek led off double and stole third base. Dobek’s steal drew a wild throw from catcher Justin Stevener but Galimo retrieved the ball and made a strong throw from left field to cut Dobek down attempting to score.
    Fort Schuyler Post scored twice in the top of the second inning and never trailed. The lone Herkimer Post run came in the bottom of the second when Tripp double and moved around the bases on a pair of ground balls.
    Tripp had two of the four Herkimer Post hits. He struck out six batters over five innings before turning the ball over to Keeler who threw two scoreless innings of one-hit relief.
    Stevener singles, doubled and scored a run for Fort Schuyler Post.
    Herkimer Post plays at home again Saturday afternoon against Utica Post 229.
