    New Hartford starter Nick Whalen was perfect for four innings Friday and the Spartans held off the Little Falls Mounties for a season-opening 9-5 victory.



    New Hartford put seven runs on the board in the second inning and two more in the third to support Whalen who struck out 11 batters.

    New Hartford starter Nick Whalen was perfect for four innings Friday and the Spartans held off the Little Falls Mounties for a season-opening 9-5 victory.
    New Hartford put seven runs on the board in the second inning and two more in the third to support Whalen who struck out 11 batters while walking four and allowing five hits.
    Vinny Maugeri had two hits and two runs batted in for the Spartans.
    Three of the five Little Falls hits went for extra bases and the Mounties broke through to score two runs in the sixth inning and three in the top of the seventh. Theo Wind had a single and one of the team’s doubles; he drove in two of the Mountie runs.
    Little Falls is scheduled to play at home Monday against Adirondack and will scrimmage Tuesday morning against Ilion.
