  • Two face welfare fraud charges

  • The Herkimer County Sheriff’s Office Welfare Fraud Unit recently arrested the following individuals for welfare fraud charges: Jennifer M. Kobus, 27, of Frankfort, and Denise R. Smith, 20, of Herkimer.

  • The Herkimer County Sheriff’s Office Welfare Fraud Unit recently arrested the following individuals for welfare fraud charges.
    • Jennifer M. Kobus, 27, of Frankfort, was arrested on charges of fourth-degree grand larceny, a Class E felony, fourth-degree welfare fraud, a Class E felony, and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a Class E felony.
    Kobus allegedly failed to report all household income, which included unemployment benefits and daycare wages she was receiving while collecting welfare benefits totaling $1,456.
    Kobus was processed and released with appearance ticket returnable to Herkimer Village Court on April 24 at 4 p.m.
    • Denise R. Smith, 20, of Herkimer, was arrested on charges of fifth-degree welfare fraud, a Class A misdemeanor and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a Class E felony. Smith was previously disqualified from receiving welfare benefits and failed to indicate that on her application, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
    She was processed and released on an appearance ticket returnable to Herkimer Village Court on April 2.
