HERKIMER 8, ONEIDA 7
The Herkimer Magicians slogged — and slugged — through the mud Wednesday and defeated Oneida 8-7.
Oneida tied the game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning but Shellbi Morris drove in a run in the bottom of the frame for Herkimer. The Magicians (3-0) walked away with a win when the Indians stranded two runners to end the game.
“It’s our youth showing when we squander a lead,” said coach Dan Stalteri whose Magicians’ three non-league wins have come against larger schools; Class A Oneida followed Class B Ilion and Clinton. “Our heart shows when we come back. ... Usually a young team has to learn how to win. This team already knows how to win.”
Rain overnight and just before game time left a sloppy infield that required additional drying materials as the game wore on. The slippery conditions hampered the movement of both defenders and base-runners.
Oneida (0-1) held leads of 1-0 and 3-2 before Herkimer scored three runs in the third inning and went ahead 5-3. The Magicians added two runs to their lead two innings later when sophomore Brianna Parks hit her first varsity home run.
Trailing 7-3 in top of the sixth inning, the Indians rallied with two outs, scoring twice before Emily LaSalle tied the game with a two-run home run. Shannon Cool relieved Herkimer starter McKenzie Pine to get the final four outs and prevented Oneida from adding any more runs.
Lindsey Parese hit a fly ball into shallow left field for a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning then charged around the bases to score the go-ahead run on Morris’ double into the gap in right-center. The ball rolled past Oneida’s center fielder, giving Parese an extra moment to score and she beat the relay throw to home plate. The Indians threw Morris out when she tried to advance to third base and Herkimer would score no more in the inning.
Cool retired the first two Oneida batters in the top of the seventh inning before walking Paige Pickard. Summer Lancette’s double to left field put Indians at second and third while down to their final out then stranded them there when Katie Buda grounded back to Cool in the circle. Cool calmly threw to Pine at first base for the out that ended the game.
“Two of our first three games have been barn-burners,” Stalteri said, “and to come back and get a win is a great feeling.”
Parese and Morris each had two hits for Herkimer and Parese, Parks and Maxine Grogan each scored two runs.
LaSalle had three hits and four runs batted in for Oneida. Lancette, Pickard, Buda and Jenna Didio all had two-hit games. Buda and Didio scored two runs each.
