  • The Ilion Police Department said Friday it has arrested four people in connection with vandalism that occurred at Russell Park last month.
The suspects, whose names were not released due to their age, are each charged with felony third-degree criminal mischief and misdemeanor fifth-degree arson, police said.
They are accused of spray painting graffiti on the sides of the building and burning the center of one of the picnic tables at the lower pavilion.
Ilion Police Chief Tim Parisi previously said the graffiti will have to be painted over and repairs made before the park opens for the season. Some of the messages painted on the building referred to the March 13 shootings in Herkimer and Mohawk, he said, indicating the vandalism occurred after that date.
Three of the subjects were arraigned in Ilion Village Court, police said.
The other was referred to the Herkimer County Probation Department due to their age.
All four subjects were released into the custody of their parents and will return to village court at a later date, police said.
In response to the vandalism, the Ilion Village Board of Trustees voted last month to install five or six surveillance cameras at the park. The cameras will run constantly and signs will be posted notifying park visitors of the presence of the cameras.
