One losing streak ended Tuesday. The other lives on.
The St. Johnsville Saints topped Richfield Springs 43-32 for their first win of the year. While the win ends a 13-game losing streak that dates back to last season for the Saints (1-11), Richfield Springs (1-10) has now lost 10 in a row since beating Sharon Springs 35-23 in its opening game Dec. 6.
The teams were close through the first quarter with St. Johnsville taking an 8-7 lead on Rylie Smith’s basket at the buzzer. Baskets by Morgan Sylvester and Ashley Fuller gave Richfield Springs its final lead at 11-8 early in the second quarter. St. Johnsville went on a 12-1 run over the final 3 1/2 minutes of the first half and led 20-12 at halftime.
The Saints got up by 12 points at 29-17 in the third quarter when Smith hit the second of her four three-pointers with 2:17 left.
The Indians closed to within six points multiple times in the fourth quarter but each time St. Johnsville responded. After Fuller’s basket made the score 33-27 in the middle of the period, St. Johnsville got three-point baskets from Smith on back-to-back possessions to stretch the margin back to 10.
The Saints had a hard time slowing their pace at the end of the game and missed their final four free throws with a chance to extend the lead further.
“We’re just not used to being in the lead,” coach Stephanie Cleveland said.
Smith led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Samantha Cleveland also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Rachael Graepel contributed eight steals off the bench.
Fuller and Jerikah Hext each scored eight points to lead Richfield Springs.
The teams meet again Monday in Richfield Springs to make up a game that was postponed Dec. 27.
Richfield Springs travels to Lauren Friday while St. Johnsville is home for a game against Saratoga Catholic.
