  • Mathew Chirico, 83, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012.
    Mathew is survived by Shirley Ann Chirico, of Mount Laurel, N.J., who he married in 1963. He is also survived by son, Michael Chirico and his wife, Liza; daughter, Susan M. Landis and her husband, Brian; eight grandchildren; and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Macrina, all of Pennsylvania. Mathew is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mathew was predeceased by his parents, M. Joseph and Ida (Purpura) Chirico; his siblings, Francis T. Chirico, Mary Theresa Macrina, Theodora Demnitz and Joseph M. Chirico; and brother in-law, Peter E. Demnitz.
    After graduating from Herkimer High School, Mathew graduated from Syracuse University and earned a master’s degree in mathematics. He proudly served in the United States Army, entering at the end of World War II. During his career, Mathew was a mathematician and computer analyst for Sperry Rand, UNIVAC, UNISYS and CSC. He worked on the first computers in the 1940s in Aberdeen, Md. He also worked on many important missions during his career including on NASA’s Apollo and mapping the ocean floor.
    A memorial will be held by the family.
    Arrangements were made by Island Cremations Service, Merritt Island, Fla.
