After falling behind early Friday, the undefeated Herkimer Magicians scored 20 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third on the way to a 41-8 Class C East win at Frankfort-Schuyler.
Matt Borek put the Magicians (3-0, 3-0 C East) in the end zone for the first time on the second play of the second quarter and Ryan Fahy’s eight-yard touchdown run gave the visitors the lead. Junior quarterback added a short touchdown run before halftime then ran for two more scores in the third quarter as the Herkimer lead swelled.
“I thought after our first series we looked good,” Herkimer coach Alan Steele said. “We’re versatile enough to take advantage of defenses.”
A couple of early mistakes had put Steele’s team behind on the scoreboard for the second week in a row. The Magicians were penalized for having too many players on the field for a fourth-down play then committed a personal foul to extend a drive that ended with a 23-yard Joe DeSarro-to-Mitchell Shortt touchdown pass for the Maroon Knights (2-1, 1-1 C East).
“We did get off to a good start,” Frankfort-Schuyler coach Jeff LaGase said. “We were able to hang in there into the second half but that’s a tough football team.
“They’re a good team (and) they outplayed us in every phase of the game.”
Just as they did one week earlier against Ilion at home, the Magicians bounced back and took control of the game.
Mills ran for 166 yards and three scores while the Herkimer defense pitched a shutout for the rest of the day. The special teams got in on the act in the second half when Terrence Oldfield pushed through the line to block a punt that Dan Appley picked up and returned 12 yards for a touchdown.
Earlier in the third quarter Herkimer had a touchdown called back when Adrian Viscomi picked up a loose ball behind the line of scrimmage and ran it from the 18-yard line. The play was ruled an incomplete forward pass.
