  • Herkimer and Oneida counties received a collective $80,000 in grants to law enforcement agencies from the state Canal Corporation in order to patrol the canals.
The Canal Corporation on Friday announced over $180,000 grants for six counties across Upstate New York, which allows county sheriffs departments to pursue a locally driven, regional approach to patrolling the canal system and ensure the safety of people enjoying the waterway.
The reimbursement-based grants fund up to 75 percent of local Marine Safety Patrol operations conducted on waterways that are part of, or contiguous to, the 524-mile-long system.
The announcement also coincides with the annual observance of National Safe Boating Week running May 18 to May 24.
