  • If any show can combine funkadelic sounds, wooden coffins and — of course — drums, it would be the Drums Along the Mohawk competition of the Drum Corps International tour.
Drum corps from across the country merged on the field of the Rome Free Academy Stadium Thursday night for the event’s 35th resurrection.
Each performing group was hosted by a local school.
In the end, the Blue Knights from Denver, Colo., took the top spot with a score of 86.80.
The teams will now travel to Allentown, Pa., for a regional show and then to Indianapolis for the Drum Corps International World Championship finals on Saturday, Aug. 10.
One of the corps, Jersey Surf, stayed at Herkimer High School until Friday afternoon, and invited the public to come watch them rehearse Friday morning.
The final scores for all of the groups were:
    • Blue Knights of Denver, Colo.: 86.80
    • Blue Stars of La Crosse, Wis.: 83.10
    • Troopers of Casper, Wyo.: 80.10
    • Oregon Crusaders of Portland, Ore.: 76.60
    • The Academy of Tempe, Ariz.: 76.50
    • Jersey Surf of Camden County, N.J.: 72.90
    • Cascades of Seattle, Wash.:  67.85
