  • A fire that leveled about a half-acre of brush and trees in the Steuben Hill State Forest may have been caused by revelers.
Capt. John Scholl with the Schuyler Fire Department said “kids that had a party” could have started a fire in the middle of two logs running parallel with Caldwell Road, usually a seasonal path.
The fire was left unattended and blew into surrounding trees and grass, he said.
The call for the fire came in around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
A couple of drink containers, including a can of Monster Energy drink and a tall-boy of beer, sat in the ashes at the crux between the two logs.
The chief of the department alerted the state forest rangers, because the fire happened on state land, who would continue an investigation, Scholl said.
