The Notre Dame Jugglers are getting healthier and seemingly getting better.
Jordan Chrobak and Kevin Warmack were on the field together for the first time Saturday and teamed up in the offensive and defensive backfields to make a major impact on the Utica parochial school’s 34-19 Class C East win over the Little Falls Mounties. Chrobak ran for 128 yards and three touchdowns on four carries, Warmack took over at quarterback when Zach Kesterson was shaken up and the pair helped hold Little Falls’ passing attack in check in the second half.
“We’re getting there,” Notre Dame coach Byron Abraham said. “Because of personnel we’ve had to change some things.”
Warmack, a sophomore, saw his first came action in last week’s loss to Herkimer. Chrobak, a senior who transferred from Clinton, missed the last two games with an ankle injury.
“Those two did a great job on defense,” Little Falls coach Bryan Shepardson said. “They’re just tough, smart football players.”
Little Falls (1-4, 1-3 C East) attacked the Jugglers’ secondary early in the game with positive results. Mike Battisti completed his first three passes, including a 31-yarder to Will Robinson and a 48-yard touchdown to Cody Dillon on the Mounties’ first drive. Little Falls led 7-0 3 1/2 minutes into the game and 13-6 following a 15-yard touchdown run by Battisti in the final minute of the first quarter.
“We made plays,” Shepardson said, “but they make it difficult to consistently make plays against them.”
Notre Dame’s defense stiffened after that. Little Falls managed just two first downs in the second quarter and Battisti threw the first two of four Juggler interceptions. Kesterson lost his helmet on a run midway through the second quarter and Warmack checked in on fourth-and-eight at the Little Falls 23. Warmack ran the option to the right holding the ball until Chroback was in position to take it down the sideline for the first of his touchdowns.
Still trailing 13-12, Notre Dame (3-2, 3-1 C East) had a chance to take the lead before halftime but saw a touchdown taken away on a penalty. Joe Giglio intercepted a pass near midfield and returned it to the end zone with the aid of a block in the back that was flagged.
Little Falls continued to struggle on offense in the second half. The only first down of the third quarter came after in illegal substitution by Notre Dame on a Mountie punt.
Alex Kondzielawa ran 41 yards for a touchdown on Notre Dame’s first offensive play of the second half and gave the Jugglers their first lead of the day. Chrobak added a 58-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 12-yarder in the fourth to put the home team up 34-13.
Page 2 of 2 - Little Falls added a late touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Battisti to Robinson in the right corner of the end zone.
Kesterson scored Notre Dame’s first touchdown on a sneak from one yard out in the first quarter after Vinny Sorce was pulled down from behind just short of the goal line on a 40-yard run. Sorce ran for 145 yards on 12 carries and Kondzielawa had 90 yards on 11 carries. Chrobak and Warmack each had one of the Jugglers’ interceptions.
Battisti ran for 90 yards and passed for 166. Robinson had 68 yards on five receptions and Dillon had 60 on three.
The Mounties host Herkimer for their homecoming game Saturday afternoon. Notre Dame is also home Saturday for its game against Frankfort-Schuyler.
