  • Paul J. Szeflinski, age 75, of State Highway #28, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.

  • Paul J. Szeflinski, age 75, of State Highway #28, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.
    He was born on March 18, 1938, in the town of Warren, the son of the late Chester and Stefania Peplinski Szeflinski. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School with the class of 1956. He then served with the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1960. On June 6, 1959, he was united in marriage to Anna L. Sarafin. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Richfield Springs. Paul served on the Richfield Springs Central School Board of Education for over fifteen years and was currently a member of the Richfield Town Planning Board.
    His lifetime passion was dairy farming. He enjoyed everything about farming from the beauty of the surrounding nature to the opportunity it provided him and his wife to raise their children on the family farm. Paul was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors, friends and family, and truly enjoyed being able to fix any type of machinery. He will be remembered as an honest, hardworking man, with a sharp mind and a wry sense of humor. He took great pride in his children and adored his grandchildren. He will be missed by his many friends and especially his family.
    Surviving are his devoted wife, Anna; two sons, Paul Szeflinski and his wife, Heather, of Hot Springs, AR, Michael Szeflinski and his wife, Doreen, of Raritan, NJ; four daughters and their husbands, Suzanne and Bill DeLude, of Herkimer, Paula and Randy Moshier, of Richfield Springs, Stacey and Gene Mayne, of Burlington Flats, Sheryl and Edward O'Donoghue, of Vienna, ME; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Stack, of Herkimer; twelve grandchildren, Evan, Lauren and Hannah DeLude, Emily and Kaylin Szeflinski, Alexis and  Natalie Szeflinski, Morgan, Brin and Chet Szeflinski, Elizabeth and Taylor O'Donoghue; one sister, Wanda Gifford and her husband, Peter, of Herkimer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Chet, on December 18, 2010.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Richfield Springs. Reverend Bernard Osei Ampong, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Richfield Springs.
    Calling hours will be at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs, on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
    Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Richfield Springs or Schuyler Lake Emergency Squads. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
