HERKIMER, N.Y. — Ilion Post 920 scored six runs in the sixth inning for the second time in as many nights to invoke the 10-run mercy rule and defeated Little Falls Post 31 12-2 Wednesday at Herkimer County Community College.
Dan Crim led Ilion Post to victory with two triples, a double and six runs batted in.
There was a tense moment in the sixth, when Little Falls Post (12-4, 6-1 Herkimer County) thought Ilion Post catcher Myles Malta seemingly railroaded Little Falls Post pitcher Josh Martin on a rundown. Heated words were shared between players, fans and coaches on both sides before the umpires finally calmed things down. The tension carried over after the game, when the managers for both teams had words at home plate amidst shouting from both teams’ fans.
Martin looked to be uninjured on the play, but was replaced by reliever Brent Baker. Martin was sent to shortstop, and the game continued.
In the game, however, there was much to be happy about for Ilion Post. Pitcher Dan Colburn pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits while striking out six batters.
On the offensive side, Ilion Post (10-8, 6-1 Herkimer County) scored two runs in the first inning, two in the second and two in the fourth, then blew Little Falls Post away with a six-run sixth to end the game early.
There was a bright spot, however, in the second inning, when center fielder Paul Barnes stole home on a pickoff throw to first by Malta. Malta did not get the out and it cost Ilion Post the tying run when Barnes beat the return throw to the plate.
Three walks and two Ilion Post errors had led to the first Little Falls Post run earlier in the inning.
An error and two hit batsmen started Ilion Post’s big inning. All three runners would score on one of Crim’s triples later in the inning. When the last run scored to end the game, the Ilion Post players, who wanted to beat Little Falls Post to forge a tie atop atop the county standings, jumped around in celebration.
Little Falls Post will try to get back on track Tuesday when it plays Herkimer Post at Harmon Field. Ilion Post plays at home again Friday against Roberts Post of Utica.
