  • One woman was killed and eight others were sent to area hospitals after a one-car crash on the Thruway in Herkimer on Sunday afternoon.
Tanya L. Evans, age 67, of Annandale, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene by Herkimer County Coroner Vincent Enea and transported to Little Falls Hospital's morgue pending an autopsy, state police said.
Just after 1 p.m. Sunday, a 2004 Chevrolet Express van driven by Jennifer Hodson, 42, of Houston, Texas, swerved off the road, re-entered the highway and rolled over several times, police said.
There were nine people in the vehicle.
Hodson and two other passengers were transported to Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, St. Luke’s campus.
Three other passengers were transported to Little Falls Hospital. One passenger was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica and later flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse by Mercy Flight.
One additional passenger was flown directly from the scene to Upstate Medical Center, also by Mercy Flight.
The State Police Troop D Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene, and closed both eastbound lanes for about four hours.
Eastbound traffic was diverted off I-90 at exit 34A in Syracuse. State police and the New York State Thruway Authority devised a detour for the exiting traffic that sent traffic down I-81 to state Route 20.
Drivers re-entered the Thruway at exit 25A in Duanesburg.
