    The Mohawk Mohicans earned a sport in the championship game at the Alliance Bank Shootout by beating Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 62-43 in Friday’s opening round.
    The Mohicans, who were without ailing third-year starter Kainan McCarthy Friday, return to Oneida Saturday to meet the host school at 5:15 p.m. in the title game.
    Leading by two points at halftime, Mohawk outscored Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 21-9 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Carson Murphy led the Mohicans’ charge with 28 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocked shots. Mike Santillo added 11 points and Paul Joyce had eight. Mitchell Werenczak grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals.
    Alex Saville scored 22 points for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.

    ONEIDA 77, CANASTOTA 46
    ONEIDA, N.Y. — The Oneida Indians led by 16 points at halftime Friday on the way to a 77-46 win against Canastota in the first round of the Alliance Bank Shootout.
    Kyle Peck had 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists to lead the Indians. Matt Carinci added 12 points while Lucas Durant and Tyler Kuhn each had nine.
    Jonathan Halsey scored 13 points for Canastota.

    CAMDEN 60, HERKIMER 49
    CAMDEN, N.Y. — Three Blue Devils scored in double figures Friday and Camden defeated the Herkimer Magicians 60-49 to open the season.
    The Blue Devils had a 20-point lead late in the fourth quarter before Herkimer narrowed the margin with three consecutive three-point baskets.
    Ryan McCarthy scored 19 points to lead the Blue Devils who took advantage of a wide gap in free throw opportunities. Camden shot 21-for-32 from the charity stripe while Herkimer attempted only 15 free throws.
    Page 2 of 2 - Evan Kessler added 16 points and Marc Snow had 12 for Camden.
    Adrian Viscomi scored 17 points to lead Herkimer and had four of the team’s six three-pointers. Mitchell Scherer added eight points in his first varsity game.
    After being outscored in each of the first three quarters, the Magicians put up 23 points in the fourth.
    Herkimer plays on the road again Tuesday at Sauquoit Valley.
