The Fort Plain Hilltoppers got 15 points, 13 rebounds and five steals from Haley Kilmartin as they completed a Section II sweep of their tip-off shootout against Section III with a 37-23 victory over Poland.
Berne-Knox-Westerlo had beaten Herkimer earlier in the evening and both schools from Section II’s Western Athletic Conference had also won Friday.
The tournament finale got off to a slow offensive start. Neither team had a field goal for almost six minutes and Fort Plain had the first nine points on an Abby Boyer basket and 7-for-10 shooting from the foul line. Paige Sullivan got the Tornadoes on the board with a free throw with 52.8 seconds left in the opening period and she assisted as Lexi Darrow recorded the team’s first basket a few seconds later.
The Hilltoppers scored the first 11 points of the second quarter and opened a 20-4 lead but an 8-0 Poland run at the start of the second half brought the Tornadoes back within five points. That was as close as Poland would get as Fort Plain pushed its lead back into double digits at the start of the fourth quarter.
Boyer had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Fort Plain (2-0) and Allehah VanLoan contributed five steals, four assists and four rebounds. The Hilltoppers had 16 steals as a team.
Kara Morrison led Poland (0-2) with eight points and 10 rebounds. Sullivan scored seven points with three steals and Brooke Gipe grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Tornadoes play on the road Monday at West Canada Valley. Fort Plain opens league play Wednesday against Mayfield.
