  • A  Herkimer man is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation and several firearms were seized from his residence Monday night following an armed standoff with village police.
According to authorities, at approximately 3:45 p.m. the Herkimer Police Department responded to a residence on Pine Avenue to check the welfare of a 21-year-old male. Information was obtained that there were weapons inside the residence. With the assistance of area law enforcement agencies, several residences in the area were evacuated and the area was secured.
Herkimer police said communication was established with the subject and at approximately 7:30 p.m. the subject exited the house and was taken into custody without incident.
Police vehicles blocked Maple Grove Avenue at the intersection with German Street and other sites for over three hours. Emergency lights could also be seen at other points near Campus Meadows, one of the Herkimer County Community College housing units.
The Herkimer Police Special Response Team located and seized several firearms from the residence. Area agencies involved were the Ilion, Mohawk, Little Falls, and Frankfort police departments, the New York State Police, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police, and Herkimer County Community College Campus Safety. The Herkimer and Ilion fire departments also provided manpower and equipment.
According to media reports, no charges will immediately be filed against the man and at least six weapons were removed from the home. Authorities say at no time were any threats made and the investigation will continue.
