  • Rowena Babcock Filkins, in recent years of Herkimer, NY, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Webster, NY, where she had been a resident for several months.
    Rowena was born on September 7, 1916, in Hartwick, NY, the daughter of Jay and Jessie (Tiffany) Babcock. She and her brother, Duward, grew up in Hartwick. He predeceased her. She graduated from Cobleskill College with a degree in Food Services. She managed the cafeteria at the Owen D. Young Central School in Van Hornesville, NY, for many years. On August 13, 1938, she married Gordon E. Filkins in Jordanville, NY, where they resided most of their married years. Gordon died March 19, 1990. She was also predeceased by her parents and a sister-in-law, Arlene (Aufmuth) Babcock.
    Rowena was an active member of the Jordanville Federated Church and the Ladies Aid Society. She also served as a volunteer at the Jordanville Public Library.
    She is survived by two sons, Duane L. Filkins (Crystal Boucher), of Rochester, NY, and Dale J. Filkins (Barbara Hatfield), of Fillmore, CA. She is also survived by a grandson, Jay A. Filkins (Katie Doran) and their son, Miles, all of Boulder, CO, and a cousin, Robert Parr (Sharlene), of Asheville, NC.
    Rowena received special support from a niece, Carole Bennett, and former daughters-in-law, Joyce Schaber and Barbara Crandall. She was also loved by the many Filkins family members who survive.
    A memorial service is planned for Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m. at the Jordanville Federated Church.
